Log & Cedar Home Staining and Refinishing
Log homes and cedar sided homes are some of the most beautiful structures around. But without the proper care and maintenance they can also not look the greatest. If left untreated or the maintenance is not kept up, this in turn could seriously jeopardize the integrity of the structure let alone the appearance. One-80 Woodcare is here to help with the huge task at hand whether it be as simple as a new construction project, maintenance coat or a total restoration.
Before any proposal or estimate is written up we will set up a time to look at the project. First thing we do is a thorough search for any wood rot or damage to the existing structure. If any is found we can assist you in finding a solution to get the damage repaired or replaced. This should be done before any restoration services take place. We will then take measurements and notes of all the factors that are needed to complete the job. If there is a failing finish on the home we will test a few areas in inconspicuous spots to make sure we can remove them. At this time we do not offer media blasting to remove finishes.
The following steps will insure you that your wood investment is protected and looking its best.
We will apply the correct cleaning detergents or strippers to completely and thoroughly remove any failing finishes, mildew, fungus, dirt or dead wood fibers. This process is then followed by using low pressure cleaning equipment to remove any foreign materials from the wood’s surface. A neutralizer/brightener is then applied to return the wood back to a proper PH prepare the project for staining/sealing. Without these steps there is a good chance the there will be issues with premature failure and the finish not properly protecting your investment. Lastly the project and surrounding area will be thoroughly rinsed.
At the time of the appointment we will discuss the option of applying a borate treatment to the logs or cedar siding. This treatment will penetrate wood creating a barrier, acting as a preservative, insecticide and a fungicide. Borates resist attacks by Subterranean Termites, Dampwood Termites, Drywood Termites, Powder Post Beetles, Carpenter Ants, other Wood Destroying Insects and Decay Fungi. For the small additional cost we highly recommend this application for that extra peace of mind.
Once the project has had a chance to dry out we then return to buff and sand the logs. This helps remove raised wood fibers and remaining finish or impurities. If not sanded the logs could look uneven or blotchy resulting in a less than desired look. Most cedar siding will not need sanding as the rough sawn side is facing out.
At the time of appointment we will discuss any caulking or chinking that is needed. As projects are being cleaned and sanded we are able to take note of areas that are needing repair. We will remove those sections that have failed and re-caulk or chink those areas. We also offer whole home caulking.
Once all preparatory work is completed we will then begin getting the home ready for the staining/sealing process. We will mask and tape off all areas of the home so no finish comes in contact where it is not suppose to. These areas include, doors, windows, lights, outlet covers etc. We also cover any concrete, landscape, vegetation or any surface where needed.
We then apply an oil based preservative that penetrates into the wood, highlighting the natural warmth and beauty of your wood investment. All while protecting it from water absorption, mildew, fungus growth, and photo degradation. Masking and plastic is then removed and a thorough clean up is done before leaving any job site.
When it comes time for the maintenance of your log or cedar sided home, the process is fairly simple. With the product that we use we do not need to strip, sand, or restore the project before applying a maintenance coat. As long as it is completed in a timely manner all we need to do at that time is apply a light cleaning detergent, lightly wash, let dry out and re-apply the same product. Time and time again this process results in a nice even finish further protecting your investment from the elements. There are many factors that come into play when determining how long a finish will last before needing a maintenance coat. On average a maintenance coat should be applied every 3-5 years on homes. We are more than happy at any given time to take a look at your home and give an honest opinion on what we see and when this process should be completed.
In some instances there are homes were a solid stain/paint is desired and/or already applied. We mostly come across this on cedar sided homes. We do offer restoration services to these projects but cannot strip the existing finish from them. We will come up with a solution that will keep your home protected and looking great. They can easily be pressure washed with the correct cleaners, sanded, and a solid finish applied. We can also come up with a plan to give your home a new look by completely changing the colors of the home. Whatever the situation is we have the experience, resources, and equipment to complete your project to your satisfaction.
